FUTURA 2000

Futura (New York, 1955) initially became famous by the name Futura 2000, which is a reference to the Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey. He is known as one of the originators of the New York subway graffiti movement. In his highly successful career -which is growing even after five decades– he came to be one of the biggest culture and streetwear icons of our time.

While in the 70s and 80s the focus of street art was on lettering, Futura showed up as a pioneer of abstract street art, in which he brought together letters and visuals. Together with his graffiti partner ALI he started the Soul Artists, a collective that focused on the matter of how graffiti could evolve to be a new genre of art in the public space. His graffiti works continued in galleries and museums, but did not limit themselves to these spaces. In the 80s he worked together with the punk-oriented band The Clash. Futura created their album covers and did live graffiti paintings on stage during their gigs. With this he reached - and inspired- a far-reaching international audience. 

Nowadays, Futura is a successful designer, and with his agency in New York he has created shoes for Nike, caps and jerseys for the New York Mets, and recently even a car for BMW. Alongside these ventures he provides guest lectures and masterclasses for students and has his own clothing line named FuturaLaboraties with an accompanying store in Fukuoka, Japan.
